Abstract:

The presenter will talk about the graded reader series that he has written and edited including the Business Readers, Pocket Readers, 10 Ways To, and 10 Things to See and Do series. He will describe the process of writing readers and how they can be used in classes.

Bio

A Professor at Toyo Gakuen University. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics and has published numerous articles. He is author of ELT textbooks and graded readers.

Abstract:

An Extensive Reading (ER) library is a positive addition to any Eikaiwa school, but how can obstacles such as small budgets, space constraints, and gaining the support of parents be overcome? A school owner will share how to overcome these obstacles while creating an environment where children are motivated to read.

Lesley Ito is the author of graded readers and the creator of LIXON Library, a library management system for schools. Her Eikaiwa school has a thriving ER library.

‘How to Foster a Love of Reading’

Abstract:

The benefits of extensive reading are well documented—not only do students become better readers, but they improve vocabulary skills, writing competency, learner autonomy, and even empathetic interpersonal skills. But how do you actually entice reluctant students to read? How can a teacher monitor and assess “reading for pleasure”? Come learn practical classroom techniques.

Bio

Dorothy Zemach is a frequent plenary speaker at international conferences. Her areas of specialty and interest are teaching writing, teaching reading, academic English, testing, and humor. In 2012, Dorothy launched Wayzgoose Press, a small independent publishing imprint.

Abstract:

This presentation will outline the process of writing a fiction graded reader and will focus on story formation, plot development, key elements, and potential pitfalls. We will discuss character creation, plot development, and other aspects of effective story telling. Information will be given about where authors may be able to publish their works.

Emeritus Professor at Notre Dame Seishin University in Okayama. Author and series editor of six series of graded readers and has recently published Teaching Extensive Reading in Another Language with Paul Nation.

‘Introducing the Penguin Graded Readers and the Seed Learning Non-Fiction Readers’

Abstract:

The presenter will introduce the new Penguin Readers launched in 2019. The series, now with 138 titles, includes the best contemporary fiction, essential non-fiction and popular classics. Seed Learning’s Culture Food and Holiday Readers will also be featured.

Graded readers provide many benefits to learners, but how can technology enhance the learning experience? In this session, we’ll look at the Oxford Reading Club and explore techniques for using e-books in different teaching contexts, and how they can increase agency and motivation with students of all ages and levels.
