   Workshops are held on Sundays about once a month


We are sorry to announce that there are no TESOL workshops at the moment because of the pandemic.

There are two workshops in a day.


Morning workshop: 10:30 – 1:00

Afternoon workshop: 2:00 – 4:30

Activities that are effective in both large and small classes




David Paul

Founded David English House in an apartment in Hiroshima in 1982 and built it up to become one of the most respected schools in East Asia. He is also the founder of ETJ (English Teachers in Japan). David has spent a lot of time travelling around East Asia training teachers and helping both private schools and ministries of education to introduce more student-centered programs. He has also been a guest speaker at many conferences throughout the region. However, these days, when he is not teaching, he focuses almost entirely on training and supporting teachers at a grass-roots level.

Aurora Dobashi

Founder of FETJ (Filipino English Teachers in Japan), a highly effective volunteer group that supports Filipino English teachers in Japan. Aurora has been teaching, training, advising, organizaing events . . . and much more for English teachers in Japan. She was the teacher trainer and chief of foriegn teachers for Sogakukan for many years, and is a presenter for the Oxford University Press Kids Club, and former teacher trainer for the International English Education of Children (IIEEC).


Aurora currently works for the Saitama City Board of Education teaching elementary and junior huigh school students. In the past, she has taught young learners in a wide variety of situations in both Japan and in the Philippines.



Scott Crowe

A Founder of Sunshine Kids English School Chain and Nuthouse Education Publishing company. Author of 9 published children’s textbooks and 4 other in-house textbooks, Scott is focused on creating learning environments in which students speak of their own volition and engage in imaginative play in English. He integrates high frequency sight word use and phonics into the language activities so that students have a fun and emotionally engaging experience when they start reading. He uses a story based approach to bring children into the imaginative world of English.

Lori Ligon

Execom member of FETJ (Filipino English Teachers in Japan) as well as one of the teachers trainers for aspiring teachers in Japan. She has been teaching at her private Eikaiwa School for 17 years and currently works for Saitama City Board of Education, teaching elementary and junior high school students.


Herman Bartelen

Full-time instructor and TEYL curriculum developer at Kanda Institute of Foreign Languages in Tokyo. He has written fourteen EFL textbook and has given more than 60 professional workshops about English-language teaching. He has a Masters in TESOL from the University of Birmingham, U.K. His Books include: Ready to Present, Take it Easy, The Story of Popular Music, Listening Power


Chadi Dubois

Chadi grew up in Africa, before moving to France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Bahamas…. Chadi has lived in 16 countries and speaks 5 languages. He worked for 5 years for Club Med resorts around the world, at the mini club, in charge of kid’s entertainment, creating shows for children, and making sure they have the best time of their life. He teaches from baby classes to Junior high school students. He trains and dispatches teachers as his school has contracts with kindergartens in Chiba prefecture. Chadi also creates events for kindergartens or elementary schools. He takes about 40 students for 3 days every year to Gunma prefecture for his summer camp called “Be part of the legend!”

A comparison of different theories and the implications of these theories for classroom practice. Teachers will look at the assumptions behind the methods we use.


YL2: Child-centered learning
Trainer: David Paul
What is child-centered learning and how can we incorporate child-centered methods in our classes? Teachers will compare teacher-centered and child-centered methods.


YL3: Teaching phonics
Trainer: David Paul
What is the role of phonics and how can we teach it effectively? This session will also contrast phonics with other approaches to teaching reading and writing and look at the role of each approach.


YL4: Phonics activities

Teachers will look at a range of activities for teaching phonics.


 YL5: Teaching listening and communication
Trainer: David Paul
How can we develop children’s listening and communication ability? The ability to communicate includes a variety of elements. This session will look at how these can be scaffolded over a period of time.

Writing is the most difficult of the four skills, but mastering writing greatly improves the children’s ability to internalize language. This session will look at how to teach writing in an effective way.

How can we use games and songs to maximise learning? Games and songs are used as extras by some teachers and just to have fun by others. How can we make them the central part of the learning process?

Ideas for children ages 6 months to 3 years. Fun and carefully balanced educational activities for children and parents. During the class, the children with their Moms/dads are engaged in fun activities such as arts and craft, music and movement, rhymes, finger plays, games, listening to stories. Activities are play-based with basic cognitive and social skills integrated.


 YL10: Bring your class alive

Interactive games and activities to drive your children wild and give them love for learning. Magic tricks, funny dances, puppets show.


YL11: Context-based teaching for very young learners
Trainer: Scott Crowe
Teachers will look at how to set up context based situations so that children use language more naturally. This will include how to incorporate High Frequency Sight Words and CVC words into fun speaking activities that get young learners very familiar with these very useful words.


YL12: Story-based teaching for very young learners

Teachers will look at how to choose a story and how to re-work a story so that it matches a target language. This will include how to choose a good story for the type of target language being focused on and how to build speaking activities around that.


YL13: Getting your students to speak out

As an English teacher, one thing that we all struggle with is getting our students to speak. Teachers will look at some techniques to get students start talking.

There are many activities that work well only in small classes. Many teachers neeed activities that are effective in large classes and can also be adapted to smaller classes.

What is happening with English classes in public elementary schools? How can we make the best use of the materials? How can we work well in team teaching situations. How can we get jobs teaching at elementary schools?


YL17: Songs, chants & rhymes in the classroom
Trainer: Herman Bartelen
Songs, chants and rhymes can add a whole new fun dimension in the classroom as children respond well to music and rhythm. Movement activities, instrument playing, and call and response singing are just a few items that can be used. This workshop will examine how songs, chants and rhymes can be used in the young learner classroom to make classrooms fun, engaging and learning-centered.


YL18: Child-centered story telling

Storytelling is an essential element in TEYL classrooms. It is engaging and fun, and can teach all of language skills. This workshop will focus on how to make storytelling more student-centered by incorporating short plays, chants, puppets, and arts and crafts.

Individual teachers or groups will prepare activities in advance and demonstrate them to the other teachers taking the program. We will all discuss the ideas that are demonstrated.
