 ETJ Email Discussion Group

All new members of ETJ who provide e-mail addresses will be invited to become members of the ETJ e-mail discussion list. There are currently just over 5,500 members of the group. The list is a Yahoo group.

The group is for discussing issues related to education, asking and giving advice on matters related to teaching, and announcing ETJ events and activities. Members of the list should feel no pressure to post messages – it is fine just to read the messages and stay quiet.

Issues that are not directly connected with education should be posted to the ETJ-LifeinJapan list. Brief job announcements can be posted to the list, but only two or three lines with a link to another site for more information. This is because the group is primarily for discussion, not for job announcements.

Messages to the group are moderated by David Paul.

Guidelines

  1. Please post a maximum of one message per topic per day so that members who receive the daily digest can more easily join in discussions.
  2. Keep messages concise and to the point without long extracts from previous postings.
  3. Try not to jump on each other too much, and definitely avoid personal abuse.
  4. Focus on the topic, not the way a previous poster expressed him/herself. There are a lot of teachers on this list and we need to tolerate a wide variety of personal styles.
  5. Avoid discussing what we should or shouldn’t be doing and how we should be doing it, and just do it – in other words, discuss the teaching of English.
  6. Keep the focus on teaching English as much as possible. Wider discussions should be carried out in a way that feels relevant to the English teachers on this list. Politics and religion are to be avoided.
  7. Please always bear in mind that most members of this list receive daily digests, may not be familiar with discussion lists, and may react negatively if a small number of members fire messages at each other in a way and at a pace that does not fully consider their situation.

Commercial messages

The restrictions on commercial messages and self promotion apply to all the ETJ national Yahoo groups – To post commercial messages, please join the ETJ Linkedin group.

Members of the list should not post commercial messages or promote their own products, services or other businesses to the list. This includes mesages that provide links to sites they are connected with that contain products or services for sale.

Messages that recommend materials or sites that the member posting the message has no vested interest in are very welcome.

Authors or others that have developed materials or services may respond briefly to specific questions on their materials/services.
